AirTag limit increased to 32 – some AirPods count as 3

Apple has recently updated a support document, indicating a change in the Find My app's capacity for AirTags and other related "items" that wasn't previously announced. Originally, the app's limit for tracking items was set at 16 when AirTags were first released. This figure has since been increased to 32, offering users more flexibility.

The Find My app segregates tracking into three categories: People, Devices, and Items, with AirTags falling under the Items category. Initially capped at 16, this limit posed a challenge for those with multiple devices. Particularly, AirPods and Beats headphones, which are classified as Items, can consume this limit more rapidly. The count varies by product type: AirPods Max are one item, first-generation AirPods and AirPods Pro are two, and the second-generation AirPods Pro count as three items due to their individual tracking ability for each earbud and the case.

MacRumors brought attention to this update, noting the expansion in the item limit. Although the change has been documented recently, it seems Apple quietly made this adjustment in 2022 with the rollout of iOS 16.
